Auburn Educational Foundation – The Creation, Purpose, and Goals by Jude G. Cyr

While I was working on my Master’s program at Antioch College in early 2000 and researching data for one of my courses, I began to brainstorm the idea of creating the Auburn Educational Foundation.  In light of various tax propositions across California and the surrounding states, many school districts along the west coast were looking for ways to enhance educational opportunities without increasing taxes.  Foundations were on the rise and the idea was slowly making its way eastward where school districts were also experiencing local funding difficulties.  Auburn School Department was no exception to the funding problems and embracing such a move made perfect sense.

During the early attempts at creating a foundation within the Auburn schools, the idea was met with great enthusiasm.  After several months of evening meetings with prospective interested citizens, however, no one volunteered to spearhead a foundation. Its time had yet to surface but I was not planning to completely give up on my idea of establishing an educational foundation in Auburn.

In the spring of 2010, I presented the concept of establishing a foundation for the Auburn Schools to the Finance Committee.  There was a sentiment among the Finance Committee that creating a foundation at that time was the right thing to do and the right time to create it.  The Auburn Educational Foundation was established by the end of 2010 with the formation of a Board of Directors and its designation as a 501 [c][3].

The concept of an Auburn Educational Foundation is intended to foster enhancement opportunities for the betterment of Auburn students.  Its purpose is to assist in the realization of the Auburn School Department’s mission and vision by supplementing the budget through fundraising and solicitation of grants on a non-profit basis. The long-term goal for the AEF is to be a sustainable effort that is supported with community involvement as well as alumni and corporate sponsors.  The Foundation plans to raise money through various activities, projects, fits and donations that will promote educational opportunities for the Auburn School Department students and graduates, promote professional development of Auburn School department staff and further the educational goals of the Auburn School Department.  I am excited to participate in this program and look forward with excitement as the Auburn Educational Foundation continues to unfold.
